National Minimum Wage- Apprenticeship Pay Rates

National Minimum Wage: Apprenticeship Pay Rate

Earlier this year the Low Pay Commission published their 2013 report on the
National Minimum Wage. This revealed high levels of non-compliance with the
Apprenticeship Pay Rate, which undermines the principle of the minimum wage for
apprentices. The minimum wage requires widespread compliance and the report
went on to recommend the need for enhanced promotion of the apprentice rate to
employers and apprentices.

As part of a range of HMRC and BIS led communications, you are required to
issue the letter to all new apprentices starting on or after the 1st October
2013. Higher Apprenticeships are not included in this requirement as the
Apprenticeship Minimum rate does not apply to them. They are covered by the age
related minimum pay regulations.
